Dr Colombo was born in Busto Arsizio, Italy on June 17, 1950.7 After completing his schooling in Gallarate, he went on to the University of Milan School of Medicine in 1968, before attending the University of Parma Postgraduate School to study Cardiovascular Medicine. From a young age, he was a gifted student; and ultimately graduated Summa Cum Laude from his medical school.7
In 1967, Dr Colombo’s love of travel took him all the way to Iran in his Volkswagen (which he affectionately named “Maggiolino”).5 In 1986, he opened a private centre based on his innovative ideas after feeling ostracised by the academic environment.5 At the American College of Cardiology Scientific Session in 2012, Dr Colombo was dubbed a “Legend in Cardiovascular Disease.”2

Dr. Emad Aziz is a Professor of Medicine and Section Chief of Cardiac Electrophysiology and Director of the Arrhythmia Institute at the Rutgers-NJMS University Hospital. Dr. Aziz is triple certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine, the American Osteopathic Board of Cardiology, and Cardiac Electrophysiology.
Dr. Aziz completed his residency training in Internal Medicine and fellowships in Cardiology and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center, a University Hospital of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, along with a fellowship in Advanced Heart Failure at Montefiore-Einstein Heart Institute. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a fellow of the Heart Rhythm Society.
Since coming to NJMS, there has been significant growth of the electrophysiology department with the latest innovations in rhythm management now being offered in both in- and outpatient settings. The procedure volume of the EP lab has increased by over 400% compared to the prior year. Dr. Aziz has introduced new procedures not previously offered in the state of NJ, including the Impulse Dynamic implantation and Wise-CRT device, through the international SOLVE-CRT trial, for advanced heart failure. University Hospital is also the first site in the state to use the newly approved MICRA AV leadless pacemaker.
University Hospital will also be one of the first institutions in the country to offer Respicardia Remedē device for central sleep apnea. In addition to the SOLVE-CRT trial, Rutgers is also enrolled in two other clinical trials: MARVEN study sponsored through NIH looking at risk factors associated with ventricular tachyarrhythmias in non-ischemic cardiomyopathy and the SAF-ILR trial studying the safety and cost effectiveness of same day loop recorder implantation vs. traditional telemetry observation for patients with unexplained syncope.
Dr. Aziz is actively involved in education and established an EP rotation for residents and an EP curriculum for fellows, including weekly ECG rounds as well as fostering multiple active research projects. He has extensively published more than 170 abstracts, over 100 manuscripts, and book chapters in peer-reviewed and professional journals. Dr. Aziz has future endeavors that include developing an ACGME accredited Electrophysiology fellowship program, comprehensive atrial fibrillation and advanced ventricular tachycardia management programs as well as introducing stereotaxis GENESIS system for advanced robotic ablations.

Professor Mohamed Abdel-Wahab is currently holding the position of Senior Consultant Cardiologist and Head of the Structural Heart Disease Department at the Leipzig Heart Center, and is a Professor of Interventional Cardiology at the University of Leipzig – Germany. The Leipzig Heart Center is one of the largest centers for cardiovascular disease management in Europe. He is leading clinical and research programs in the field of transcatheter valve replacement and complex coronary interventions. Before he moved to Leipzig, Abdel-Wahab was leading the coronary and structural heart disease program at the Heart Center of the Segeberger Kliniken in Bad Segeberg – Germany. He was presented the 2013 Publication Award of the Working Group on Interventional Cardiology of the German Society of Cardiology and the 2015 Andreas Grüntzig Award of the German Society of Cardiology. Mohammad Almutairi is a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist and Ex- Chairman of the Department of Cardiology in Chest Diseases Hospital. He obtained his MB, ChB with honour from Kuwait medical school, Kuwait University in 1997. He did his internship year in Farwaniya Hospital followed by a year serving as an assistant registrar in internal medicine.
He went to do an internal medicine residency program in McGill University in Montreal, Canada from 1999 to 2002. He then stayed at McGill University to complete a three years cardiology fellowship from 2002 to 2005 and one extra year of interventional fellowship mainly trained to be a specialist in catheterization via the radial approach.
Dr. Almutairi returned to Kuwait in July, 2006 and immediately joined the Cardiology Department in Chest Diseases Hospital. Since his return he made sure to establish the radial approach as the preferred approach for catheterization in Kuwait and now more than 85% of cases are done radially. He also completed level II training in multislice cardiac CT.
Dr. Almutairi has served as a speaker and/or panelist in several international meetings.
Dr. Almutairi is a member of Kuwait Cardiac Society, a fellow of the Gulf Heart Association,

Dr. Aziz completed his pediatric cardiology fellowship at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in 2010 and continued his training there in pediatric electrophysiology. During his fellowship, Dr. Aziz was awarded a training grant under the National Institute of Health (NIH) to investigate genotype and phenotype correlations in pediatric patients with long QT syndrome. Dr. Aziz also acquired skills in catheter ablation of pediatric arrhythmias and device (pacemaker and ICD) implantation. Following his fellowship, Dr. Aziz joined the Cleveland Clinic as a pediatric electrophysiologist. He is active in the training and teaching of medical students, residents and fellows, an activity that continuously inspires him. Dr. Aziz is also quite active in research and was the recent recipient of the SADS 2011 Young Investigator Award for his work on long QT syndrome.
Dr Aziz acquired skills in Catheter Ablation of pediatric arrhythmias and device implantation which is a regular part of his clinical practice. He is the director of the Inherited Arrhythmia Clinic and of Pediatric Sports Cardiology.

Raj Makkar, MD is a world-renowned leading expert in interventional cardiology and is one of the most widely cited researchers on the management of valvular heart disease. He has performed the greatest number of transcatheter valve implantation (TAVI) procedures in the world and has led the field in advancing the procedure to ensure the best outcomes for patients. In 2020, he performed the most transcatheter mitral valve repair procedures with the MitraClip system in the United States and is the national principal investigator for mitral valve replacement research studies. Prof. Hijazi is an interventional cardiologist who specializes in treating congenital and structural heart disease in both children and adults. He is a pioneer in the non-surgical repair of congenital and structural heart defects.
In 2007 Prof. Hijazi became the Director of the Rush Center for Congenital and Structural Heart Disease at Rush University Medical Center, Chicago and in 2010, he became the James A. Hunter, MD, University Chair. In January 2014, he became the inaugural chair of Pediatrics at Sidra Medicine and in April 2021 became the Chief Medical Officer.
On May 11, 2008, Prof. Hijazi became the 31st president of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI), the major organization for interventional cardiologists that has more than 4,000 members worldwide.
On September, 2020, Professor Hijazi became the Founding President of a newly formed the PICS Society (Pediatric & Congenital Interventional Cardiovascular Society), the only Society that caters to the needs of pediatric and congenital interventional cardiologists as well as patients with congenital heart disease.
